Chapter 16

Consciousness came to me in slow drops. Light seared my eyelids as thin white curtains leaked sunshine into the guest room window. I’d left the window open last night and the sounds of Maui birds in Grady’s backyard floated in on the breeze. The curtains fluttered and warm, humid air washed over me.

For the first time in a long time, I had no little girls to take care of, no responsibilities other than staying alive. And though I missed those two warm, wiggly people making chaos of my day, waking up all on my own was a welcome break from the norm. I stretched under the sheet, but made no move to get up.

In a spurt of hedonism, I’d slept naked. Though I didn’t intend to do a damn thing about it, there was something sinful about the thought of Grady sleeping just a room away. I’d chickened out after a few kisses last night and then spent hours tossing and turning, reliving every moment with Grady since this mess first started.

I stretched my arms high over my head, my body shifting under the thin sheet. I didn’t have a clue what time it was—all I knew was that I hadn’t been able to fall asleep until the sun was making an appearance in the window.

A tentative knock sounded at the door. I flung myself into a sitting position and pulled the sheet up to my chin as Grady squeaked the door open.

“I’m not looking.” He hesitated in the hall.

“I’m covered.” Well, mostly covered.

All that stood between him and me was one thin cotton sheet and some even thinner willpower, but he didn’t have to know that.

Grady peeked around the door. For once, he wasn’t spit polished and ready for inspection. He was wearing a battered old pair of running pants and a T-shirt that had seen better days, but he looked so deliciously rumpled that my mouth watered and the hesitation from last night was forgotten.

“I hope I didn’t wake you…”

“No, I was awake.” I clutched the sheet to my chest.

Grady looked up a little and he lifted one corner of his mouth. His eyes traveled back down to the floor in a rush, and he jammed his hands into his pockets, his arms locked at his sides.

I waited for the next sentence, but nothing came out of his mouth. “Did you want something?”

“It’s noon, and I figured you might be hungry. Anything you don’t eat?” He was still addressing the floorboards.

Maybe last night had gotten under his skin, too. “I’ll eat anything and everything you serve.”

“Great,” he said. “We’ll have breakfast in the kitchen.”

Grady made no move to leave, just stood there in the doorway. His eyes lifted again, and his lips twisted.

“Umm…okay, I’ll be out as soon as I’m dressed.” I wondered if he was waiting for me to stand up and follow him to the kitchen, but without my clothes I was stuck in place.

“Okay.”

A few more seconds ticked by. The breeze passed through the sheet and caressed my skin, stroking my body with its humid touch.
